In March 2018 Crain’s Detroit Business reported that health care businesses account for a major portion of Michigan’s economy, estimated to be about $490.2 billion in 2016, according to U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis figures. A Michigan Health and Hospital Association (MHA) Economic Impact Report notes that the healthcare industry in the state provided more than 602,000 direct jobs in 2017, illustrating the undeniably significant role the industry plays in the economic welfare of Michigan’s economy.
MHA CEO Brian Peters stated, ‘In addition to protecting Michiganders’ health and wellbeing, hospitals and health systems provide jobs representing nearly 40 percent of health care’s economic activity in Michigan, making them essential to the state’s financial welfare’.
